Behind the Scenes of the Best NIL Commercial of 2022

We’ve been wanting to produce a commercial similar to the NFL Fantasy Files commercials done over a decade ago. With the right shots, plates, and editing - we were able to make this video production a successful and engaging commercial.

The setup

Prior to filming this, the Backstory team did a handful of tests. We knew we would have limited time with both the Bank CEO, Steve Miller, and the Fresno State Wide Receiver, Jalen Cropper, so we wanted to make sure we could film this quick. We actually filmed an entire commercial before filming this which left us with about 10 minutes to film it all. This video consists of about 5 different shots and 2 different plates. A plate is a frame recorded by the camera with a still background that can be used for reference in post-production. These shots were stitched together to create these effects. Everything from Cropper catching the ball, to Mr. Miller being hit in the head (even though we actually did hit him in the head with the football).

The outcome

The behind-the-scenes video makes this look easier than it was. We ran into a handful of issues during the edit, but we were able to find quick solutions. Filming the plates gave us some flexibility and everything after that needed a little creative solution to cover the different clips we spliced together. We added fake camera movement and some fake zooms to really sell the effect. It’s pretty hard to catch where those are, but maybe you saw them.
